Kelheim – Regensburg River Cruise

29 June

Today we went through the final stretch of the Main-Danube Canal to Kelheim and entered the River Danube. We later saw Regensburg, one of Germany’s best preserved medieval cities.

Weltenburg Abbey

06:00 – The ship arrived in Kelheim while we were getting up.

08:30 – Bus trip to Weltenburg Abbey for beer tasting. The church is extremely beautiful. The beer is fine but the pretzels were coated with lots of salt and not memorable. A local brass band give us a little performance.

Then we took a ferry ride along the Danube Gorge.

12:15 – Bus to Regensburg. We were taken back to the ship for lunch, which was now in Regensburg. There was steady rain, which was great news for the river navigation, but not good for sight-seeing.

15:30 – On our 1-hour guided walking tour we saw one of the oldest bridges crossing the Danube and saw the city’s architectural highlights including the Old Town Hall. We continued walking around on our own until 5 pm.

17:45 – Port Talk – We are sailing tomorrow to Passau, so the river depth is no longer a problem.

18:00 – We enjoyed a Bavarian guitar + accordion band on board before dinner (not the advertised Oompah Oompah band). We went past an impressive monument known as Walhalla.
